happy birthday to mama!

yesterday was my birthday and i had such a nice day! it was just a relaxing day at home - adam made me a nice breakfast and then while he gave the kiddos a bath, i grabbed a book, went upstairs and took a nice, hot soak myself. we all got dressed and popped out to pick up some chinese take-out for lunch.

while ben took his nap, adam and sophie mixed up a cake to bake and when it was all cooled, ben and sophie helped decorate it with some frosting and sprinkes. they did a great job and were proud to serve the cake after dinner - and it was tasty!

one of the best parts of the day, though, was first thing in the morning when the kiddos brought me their gift to open. i made sure adam knew i didn't want any presents - it's so close to christmas and we have other ways we want to spend our money right now - so i told him what i really wanted was some nice homemade cards or pictures that the kids made. what i got, instead, was this elaborate craft project that adam says took several craft sessions to finish.

it's a whole bunch of butterflies attached to a kind of wire stand. sophie cut out all the shapes and she and ben colored and decorated them. they were so excited to give it to me - and it was the most perfect gift! i love looking at it and its so special that they took so much time and effort to make something so unique. they're such good kiddos! and, of course, i've got a great husband who coordinated it all!
