ben's stash

as ben has become increasingly interested in the potty and usually spends the hours between breakfast and lunch without pants on so that he can use the potty as he needs to (with very few accidents, i might add) i started to think about how i'll actually be a little sad when he is eventually out of diapers. and that got me thinking that its been a really long time since i've made much mention about how things are going with cloth diapering.

we love it. there are so many misconceptions about cloth diapering out there, and i don't have the time to dispute them all - but i can say that it was definitely the right decision for our family and one that we're extremely proud of. the extra work is very minimal, and i've found that i actually enjoy sitting and folding a basket of fluffy diapers, even though i'm not usually a laundry fan. i also can't tell you how great it is to never worry about running out of diapers or needing to run to the store to get more. and they're awfully cute, which is a nice bonus.

although we started out using contours and fitted diapers with separate covers, as ben became older and more wiggly with each diaper change, we started to appreciate the few pocket diapers that we had. gradually, we made the switch and converted our entire stash to pockets. a pocket diaper is exactly like it sounds - there are two layers, one of which is the outer waterproof layer, between which there is a pocket you fill with absorbent inserts. you can add extra inserts if you have a heavy-wetting baby or for naps and bed times. the beauty of these diapers is that if you pre-stuff them (which i do right after i wash them - then i can bring them all up into his room ready to go), its just like putting on a disposable diaper. there's just one piece to worry about and you're done. simple.

we tried a few different brands and styles, but we settled on a final stash with a mixture of our favorites. most of our diapers have snap closures, just because during the summertime it was impossible to let ben run around in his diaper if it didn't have snaps... anything with aplix (like velcro) would be undone in no time. i have a feeling we'd have had the same trouble with disposable diapers.
