on the mend

ben's definitely better. he's still having some yucky poops, but from the reading i did today, i guess that's pretty normal. apparently the intestines, particularly in babies, are so sensitive that once they've been irritated, it can take awhile for them to get sorted out even after the initial illness has past. apparently it can last as long as 3 – 4 weeks for the intestines to recover, but usually more like a week. the articles i read did mention that temporary lactose intolerance is a typically a culprit, while the intestines are healing, so not to give cow's milk or other dairy products (other than yogurt) until baby is back to normal. ben doesn't drink cow's milk regularly, so that's no issue for us, but we did cut out cheese for now, even though he loves it. we've been trying to feed him lots of recommended foods, like applesauce, rice cereal, and yogurt (all mixed together, which he loves) and he's been much better today. luckily he seems to be over the rest of the flu stuff - he's still a little more tired than usual, but otherwise is pretty much back to normal. it was so sad to see him sick, but thankfully it was pretty short lived and he wasn't too bothered by it all. here's to hoping that's the last illness we see for awhile!
