spreading it out we decided to take a bit of a hanukkah approach to our gifts with the kids this year. because we're going to be out christmas eve and then out most of the day on christmas, we thought that it would be too overwhelming to try to do our own gifts on christmas morning before we head out the door... so we opted to start a couple of days before christmas and open a few ahead of time. we started last night, with each kiddo getting to open one gift from under the tree. ben opened up a castle shape sorter toy which he's really been enjoying. he got into the opening, too, really ripping into the paper and having fun with it. i like being able to open the gifts slowly like this. it's an awful lot for a little kid to take in all at once. i also feel like we put a lot of time and thought into the gifts that we choose and ours are the ones that often get overlooked in the chaos of the day, because we end up trying to rush through them. we will still leave a few gifts under the tree for christmas morning (and of course they will each have a gift and stocking from santa), but we really tried not to go overboard this year and there are only a handful of gifts for each of them anyhow... so we'll open another one or two tomorrow before heading to my mom's and that should keep the whole process a lot more manageable and less overwhelming for everyone!
