first birthday party

ben had his birthday party yesterday afternoon. it was a really nice party - just family for some afternoon snacks and then presents and cake. he was pretty excited, i think, as he saw the decorations going up and then as people started arriving he knew something fun was going on. he actually went and stood at the window for awhile and watched for more guests.

we had a pretty full house, considering we don't have a ton of room... for ben's benefit when he reads this later on, i'll recount the guest list: grammy, brianna, tara, grandpa, gigi, aunt jessica, rigel, nana & grandpa, uncle craig, auntie renee, noah, and corinne. it was great to have so many little ones. both sophie and ben had fun playing with noah (who is between them in age) and everyone enjoyed ooh-ing and aww-ing over the two newer babies. next year's party will be a circus once they're all up and cruising!

ben was really happy the entire time and made the rounds to visit with everyone. he took the task of opening presents pretty seriously, but he did well and checked out each gift once they were opened. when it was time for cake, he wasn't exactly sure what to think at first, but it didn't take him long to dig right in. i had made him his own tiny cake decorated to match the big one the rest of us ate. he demolished the cake, and even did a little re-decorating of the kitchen by flinging some of it off his hands as he tried to clean them off. he got a few good handfuls in his mouth, but actually mainly ate with his fork. he did a lot more playing than eating and finally decided he wanted to be cleaned up and would rather eat the cheese he was eyeing on the table. he had fun with it, though, and that was the whole point.

he started getting pretty tired at the end and just wanted to be held - but he was still happy. after everyone headed home, adam took sophie out to pick up a pizza and i stayed home with ben and opened up his new tractor set, allowing him to get some time without his sister trying to "share" with him. he loved pawing through his stack of new books, too. this morning after breakfast he sat very happily in his high chair while i read him several of his new books... he was very attentive and seemed to enjoy them a lot. i love reading to both kids and i'm excited to have so many great new stories!

thanks to everyone who came and made it a such a special day for our little man!
