birthday plans

i can't even believe that we're already planning ben's first birthday. where on earth did this year go???

i've been having kind of a hard time with it - it's so hard to imagine that my baby boy is going to be a year old already. i love watching him grow and develop, but knowing that ben is our last baby and this is the last time we'll experience this new baby phase makes me wish it would last just a little bit longer. and i don't think it helps that i've been sorting through all of his pictures for the slideshow i'm making of his first year... he's just so beautiful and sweet and tiny - it's enough to make anyone a little weepy, i think!

anyhow, we're going to be throwing a little family party for ben the weekend after his birthday. we're going to have a book party, like we did for sophie. of course, everyone is welcome to bring any gift they'd like (or none at all - no pressure!), but we'd like to help build ben his own little library, too. sophie got so many great books on her first birthday with nice personal messages written in them - a collection that she will certainly treasure as she grows and hopefully pass onto her own children when the time comes. i would love ben to have the same sort of library. plus, we don't have many "boyish" books around here and it might be nice to add a few to the mix.

adam and i have been thinking hard about which books we personally want to give to ben. we both picked a favorite to give to sophie on her first birthday and we wanted to pick out something equally special for ben. luckily adam and i are both big readers (and were as children, too) so we had several favorites to choose from. we finally made our decision, and adam is going to be giving him the lion, the witch and the wardrobe by c.s. lewis and i chose the giver by lois lowry. it's fun to find a story that you really enjoyed and has some great lessons in it, and pass it along to your child. it will be a number of years before ben can read either of these books, but i think it will be special for him, when he finally can, to know that his parents selected them for him with great thought way back on his first birthday.

we're going to keep the party pretty simple - not a huge crowd, simple appetizer-ish food, presents and cake - but what else does a one-year-old need? i can't wait to see how he reacts to opening presents - or even more, what he'll think of being allowed to eat cake!
