first trip to the ocean

we took a little trip to the ocean today with leah, one of my best friends from high school. it was the perfect maine summer day - just right for sitting on the beach and catching up. sophie and adam spent most of their time exploring the beach and playing in the waves, but leah, ben and i made ourselves at home on the sand. i was actually really surprised by how well ben did. i worried that i would be constantly fighting him from eating the sand, but he was much busier playing with the shovels and other sand toys we brought along. now don't get me wrong, the boy ate plenty of sand, but it was mainly because he just got so covered in it and does put his hands in his mouth quite a bit... but at least he wasn't just trying to eat it by the handful or anything.

i did take him down to the water for a few minutes, but he wasn't very excited about the temperature. he was ok sitting there with sophie and adam until a wave came up - and then he wanted up! we had a similar situation when i tried to clean some of the sand off him in the showers - the water was just so cold and he wasn't very happy with that. but he calmed as soon as he was out and slept on the way home.

sophie and ben played pretty well together when they were sitting in the sand - but it makes me really look forward to next year when ben will be able to enjoy it so much more and they'll really be able to play!
