first finger foods

ben's been a real handful lately as he's been learning to pick up very small objects (dirt, lint... anything he can find on the floor) and putting them in his mouth. this was a sure sign that he is interested in feeding himself. his hand-eye coordination is great, so it was really just a matter of him being ready to chew food well enough. or gum the food, rather, as he doesn't have any teeth yet. i've been adding more texture to his food lately, not blending it nearly as smooth as i had been, and he's been doing really well - so we figured he was ready to try feeding himself some small finger foods. all of the pieces we gave him were so small that they were fine if swallowed whole - but he got the idea still.

and so ben had his first non-pureed food tonight... he ate some green beans right along with us, and then had a few gerber sweet potato puffs (which look kind of like cereal, but are veggie flavored and dissolve in baby's mouth). he loved it! he was so proud of himself and did really well. obviously, he'll still be getting the pureed stuff primarily, but i think we'll start adding in a bit of the finger foods at each dinner time - it will help him get used to it and let him feel like he's a part of what the rest the family is doing. i can't get over what a big boy he's becoming.
