ben's new ride

we finally switched ben from his infant carrier car seat to a convertible car seat that will fit up to 33 pounds rear-facing and 40 pounds forward-facing. the seat infant carrier is good up until 20 pounds for weight, but ben has already outgrown the height requirement so we had to get him in the new seat.

even though he's bigger than sophie was, we actually kept him in the carrier longer. we moved her out just as she turned 5 months old, before she had outgrown it, just beause we really weren't using the carrier aspect of it anymore. with ben, it was so convenient to be able to keep him in the carrier when we were out and about because we also had sophie with us. as an example, sophie would sit in the front seat of the cart at the grocery store and i would just place ben's seat in the back of the basket. now that he's outgrown it, we're going to have to get more creative. i guess ben can sit in the front of the grocery cart and sophie can walk - but more likely i'll probably keep sophie in the front and carry ben in the sling. we'll figure it out.

ben seemed to like his new seat - its a bit higher and he can see more, i think. and sophie thought it was pretty funny to see ben in "her" seat. (we took the seat that sophie has been using and gave it to ben and moved sophie into a slightly bigger model that should last her until she only needs a booster seat in the car - up to 65 pounds.) in some ways, it makes ben look so much bigger and older being out of the "baby" seat, but at the same time it makes him look little again because the seat is so much bigger than his old one.

and now we can go ahead and get rid of the carrier and the two bases we have for it. we're all done having babies and with car seat technology changing all the time, its not worth saving it for anyone in the family who might use it years from now. in fact, we're thinking of selling our matching stroller, too (the whole travel system might be more appealing to a buyer) and using the money to get a double stroller. we toyed with the idea a few months ago, but never did it. now i think we're going to start looking at them again. we found one model that's pretty compact and actually doesn't take up much more room than the stroller we had... so it will still be practical to use even when sophie doesn't want to ride in it.
