unswaddled

ben slept unswaddled last night for the first time. swaddling worked great with sophie and was the same for ben - it helped him feel secure and helped him sleep better. even once he started rolling over, it didn't seem to bother him to be swaddled (he couldn't roll when his arms were stuck by his sides, so it actually allowed him to stay in his bassinette a bit longer). but lately, he's been wiggling his way free and rolling over anyway. it made me a bit nervous to have him rolling over that way, so i decided it was time to stop using the swaddle. i was even more convinced when it actually seemed to be hindering his sleep rather than helping it. sunday night, he was waking up 3 or 4 times in the night because he was rolling around and couldn't get comfortable with his swaddle blanket on.

so on monday night, after the second time he woke up, i took him out of the blanket and put him back in his crib without it. he slept great and didn't wake up again until morning. last night i skipped the blanket altogether and put him down without it. he immediately rolled onto his belly and slept soundly. he woke up to eat around 1:00 and then at 5:00 - and then i actually had to wake him up this morning around 8:30 to get him ready for his doctor appointment. he seems to be happier sleeping on his belly - i remember sophie being the same way once she was old enough to roll on her own and get settled in her own position. he looks like such a big boy in his crib without his swaddle, curled up with his bum in the air!
