nipped it in the bud

...or the boob, as it were.

i spent the past couple of days trying to ward of mastitis after getting a clogged duct in my right breast. i mentioned to adam that it was sore when i went to bed on wednesday night and by the time ben woke for his nighttime feeding i knew there was a problem. he nursed his usual amount of time, but i could feel that the breast hadn't drained in one area. sure enough i could feel a bump in the area where the clogged duct was and i knew what the problem was right away.

i had this problem once during the entire time i was breastfeeding sophie, but because i didn't recognize the problem right away, it did develop into mastitis (an inflammation of the breast that can be caused by an obstruction which causes a fever and other flu-like symptoms - not a whole lot of fun). this time, i knew what was happening right away and thankfully was able to deal with the issue before it developed into a bigger problem. i got up after ben's feeding and went downstairs to pump some more. i spent all day thursday feeding him from the affected side (and pumping from the other, so as not to disrupt my supply) because babies are much more effective at sucking than any pump could be. by thursday night the clog seemed to be gone and i was feeling much better. today i feel 100 percent better.

i'm so glad that i recognized the symptoms before i got sick like last time. experience really does make all the difference.
