28 week appointment

yesterday morning we had our 28 week appointment. this time we saw dr. o'hare, who we had met before. there are still two doctors with the practice that we haven't met yet (we'll meet one next time) because a new one joined in july.

i was scheduled to take the glucose test again today (this is the appointment that everyone generally takes it - the test i had done earlier was just an extra screening because i'd had gestational diabetes before), so i was given the glucola drink as soon as i arrived in the office. that was nice, because our hour countdown started as soon as we got there and we really only had about 15 minutes left to wait once our appointment was done.

i went with the nurse to be weighed and have my blood pressure checked - everything was fine in those areas. then adam and sophie joined me in the exam room and we waited for the doctor. her visit was pretty quick. she took a quick measurement of my uterus, which is measuring at 30.5 weeks - just about 2 weeks ahead. i've been measuring ahead all along, but this is the first time we knew by just how much. she assured us its totally normal to be a little ahead like that and has nothing to do with the size of the baby... the baby won't really gain his weight until closer to the end. we then got to listen to the heartbeat which was 147 bpm. dr. o'hare tried to let sophie push the button to turn on and off the doppler, but sophie got shy and didn't want to do it - but she did get a kick out of hearing the heartbeat again.

we didn't have any questions or anything to discuss this time, so the appointment was over in no time. she did talk a little bit about touring the hospital (she reminded us to call ahead to make sure there would be rooms available for us to see) and that was it. we went ahead and set up our next appointment - we go every two weeks now! - and then waited in the lab for my hour to be up. when the time was up, i had my blood drawn for the glucose test and then we were done.

the woman in the lab wasn't sure about the timing for the glucose test, so she couldn't tell me when to expect a phone call about it. i do know that this office doesn't call unless there is a problem, and since i'm anxious to know, i will probably go ahead and give them a call on monday to check out the results. i am pretty much counting on having failed this test and having to take the 3-hour test... and i'm pretty much counting on failing that one, too - just based on odds. nearly everyone who has gestational diabetes will have it again in subsequent pregnancies, so i'm just assuming i will. and that really isn't a big deal to me, since it was so easy to control last time, i'm just not looking forward to the extra appointments that go along with it. but, we've got less than three months left, so either way we'll manage just fine.
