mini appointment i had to go into the doctor's this morning for some lab work. they wanted me to have an early glucose screening done (with a history of gestational diabetes, its more than likely i'll have it again) and i also had the afp screening. the afp test screens for four different chromosomal and nuerological disorders... it doesn't tell you whether your baby has them, just whether or not you are at a higher risk for carrying a baby with one of those disorders. if the screening comes back positive, then you go for more testing to see if there is actually anything wrong. i had the test with sophie, but actually considered not doing it this time - because of our age and the fact that we have no family history we're already at a lower risk - but it's just a blood test and i guess its better to have some peace of mind knowing that we took it. i was going to have the afp blood drawn last week at my appointment, but when the doctor mentioned the glucose screening, she suggested that i wait to have the afp drawn at the same time - that way i'd only have to get stuck once. that sure made sense to me! i don't have a needle phobia or anything, but i certainly don't want to do it if i don't need to. the doctor earned some big points for that one. it was pretty uneventful. we had to hang out in the office for an hour after i had the glucose drink - and then at the end of the hour they drew the blood for both tests. sophie was pretty good - she got a little stir-crazy for a bit and tried to run through the office whenever a door opened, but overall the time actually seemed to pass pretty quickly. adam was with us, which was nice. i don't know if he'll be able to make it to every appointment this time - but he's going to try.
