first appointment we had our first appointment yesterday morning. it was just a meeting with a nurse to go over paperwork and such, but it was great to see the new practice and meet some of the people. i really liked it. it's a lot smaller than the practice we went to before, which i suppose has its advantages and disadvantages, but it's not like its tiny... just a bit more personal, i guess. the nurse i talked with was super nice. in fact at the end when i needed to head to the lab area to have my bloodwork drawn, she brought me to that waiting room - when she saw how full it was, she took me back out and said she'd draw my blood herself so that i wouldn't have to wait. i was certainly appreciative of that! while i was with the nurse, we went over all kinds of history questions and basic health questions. the only thing that we really needed to talk about was the gestational diabetes. since i had it last time, it's most likely that i'll have it again... so they won't wait to test me like they would another patient. they will likely just start sending me to meet with the people at the diabetes center and start the diet and such just in case. which is fine with me - i was planning on following it anyhow. they'll do the actual testing a little earlier and then we'll go from there. i will talk with an actual doctor about more of the details when i see him next week. one thing that made me pretty happy about our decision to deliver at smmc this time was the way the nurse talked about it. she was sure to tell me that i would have a very different experience there than i had at maine med. she said that because maine med is a teaching hospital, there's usually a lot of interns, etc, in and out of the rooms - and that was certainly true. it was often kind of busy and confused - we weren't really sure who to ask what and so on. we had a great experience and i don't regret it, but it will be nice to have something different this time. she said at smmc, they keep things much more calm and soothing. more of a home-like atmosphere. that was just what i wanted to hear. adam and sophie came with me, but they just waited in the lobby and walked around outside for a bit. hopefully, next time when the ob checks for the heartbeat, they'll be able to come in for that. we go back on monday for that appointment. after that we'll have monthly visits up until around 30 weeks. the nurse also talked a little bit about the 20 week ultrasound - which she said should be around the second week of june. that really doesn't seem so far away! i can't wait! oh - and they also changed my due date from the 7th to the 2nd... based on my last menstrual period. i told her that we had charted and i knew i'd ovulated a few days later than day 14 (what the office charts are based on) - but she said that since it is really just an estimation and they only consider a due date as accurate within a week on either side of the date, a few days didn't really matter. rather than trying to keep track of two dates, i'm just going with theirs. like she said, it doesn't really make a difference in the long run. so - we'll be 12 weeks tomorrow! only one more week until we're into the second trimester!
