12 week appointment i had my first doctor appointment today. it was just a basic exam and i talked with the doctor for a few minutes, but the nurse had really covered all of the intro stuff with me last week. the doctor i met with today, dr. sloan, was very nice, but unfortunately he has been recently diagnosed with als and will no longer be doing any deliveries... so from now on we will probably see the other doctors in the practice, so as to be familiar with whoever is on call when we have the baby. after the exam, he took out the doppler to check for the heartbeat. he found it right away and what a beautiful sound that was! the big disappointment was that adam wasn't there to hear it. the doctor didn't even tell me he was going to listen until he was already doing it, so i didn't have time to ask if adam could come in. however, i wasn't so upset because we also found out that we're going to get an ultrasound this week! while talking about the dating discrepency, dr. sloan suggested that we do an ultrasound to just make sure we've got the due date correct. he listened to me when i told him that i knew when i'd ovulated, and he did say that confirmed what he'd thought considering my cycle history and so on, but he didn't seem to put total faith in charting. however, i wasn't even about to push the issue once he'd mentioned an ultrasound because i hadn't expected that! so, after changing my due date last week, i'm assuming that the ultrasound will have them change it right back again. we'll see, i guess. ultrasounds are really only good for dating early on in the pregnancy - even by this point they become less accurate - so the dates could still be off by a little. really, its all just a ballpark anyhow, so a few days either way isn't going to make any difference. adam was bummed that he didn't get to hear the heartbeat with me, but telling him we were going to get to see the baby this week did make up for it. i scheduled the appointment on the way out and we were able to get in this week - thursday afternoon. i'm so excited! other than that, i go back in a month for my next appointment.
