trying for baby number two! adam and i have always said that we wanted our children close in age. when sophia was born, we decided that we would start trying to conceive again around her first birthday. knowing the troubles we had getting pregnant before, we wanted to start trying again as soon as we were ready... that way, if it took awhile it was ok, but if it happened right away, that was ok, too. sophie's first birthday came and went, and we started talking more and more about if we were ready. of course we had reservations... could we afford it? was sophie too young? would we be able to share our love and attention with two children? in the end, i kept imagining our children in a few years, so close in age and being able to be playmates and friends. that is what i want for our family. that is what we have always talked about. and of course, there is the excitement of a new baby. adam and i are both looking forward to experiencing pregnancy and birth once more, and welcoming a new member into our family. due to adam's new job, we are without health insurance until the first of april, so we had decided to start trying to get pregnant in march. however, in the past week or so, we started talking again about maybe starting to try this month instead. the reality is that the chances are pretty slim we'll get pregnant on the first try... and even if we did, a doctor won't even schedule a first appointment until between 8 and 12 weeks anyhow... and we'd be into april by then. so we've been back and forth over it a lot over the past few days... finally last night, we were in the living room talking after sophie was in bed. we hadn't come to a final decision one way or the other, but the conversation lulled and adam got up from the couch. i thought he was going into the other room for something, but he came over, kissed me, and whispered "lets make a baby." quite possibly one of the most romantic things i've ever heard him say. so, we've decided to go for it. i've been charting and using the fertility awareness method for months now, ever since my period returned at 8 months post-partum. i wanted to see how things were going, since i had no idea what to expect. besides the fact that my cycles were totally irregular before having sophie, i knew that breastfeeding can also cause irregular cycles in many cases. i was surprised to see that things were looking pretty normal. my cycles were long (usually about 5.5 weeks) but gradually ovulation started happening earlier and i was the most "normal" i've been in years. i was hopeful that we might be able to conceive without the fertility meds this time around. in fact, at my 6-week post-partum checkup, doctor wilkis had mentioned the possibility that pregnancy could have "fixed" me. apparently it happens quite often that people who suffer from infertility have an easier time after a successful pregnancy. i'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll have that kind of luck. so... for now we're just waiting. judging from my past charts, i'm projected to ovulate on valentine's day. maybe that's a good sign? we'll see...
